FG to deworm pupils in 17 states

The Federal Ministry of Health will in December deliver an integrated deworming programme for pupils in public primary schools across 17 states currently under the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme.


Vice President Yemi Osinbajo's spokesman, Laolu Akande, listed the benefitting states as Abia, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Niger, Osun, Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Anambra, Benue, Imo, Kano, Kaduna, Ebonyi, Delta and Plateau,
He said the programme would deliver three different drugs for the treatment of diseases endemic to specific states; particularly bilharzia; soil-transmitted worms and river blindness.
Akande mentioned the drugs to be distributed as Albendazole, Ivermectin and Parazaquintel.
He said over five million pupils in 28,249 schools were currently being fed in Anambra, Enugu, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ebonyi, Zamfara, Delta, Abia, Benue, Plateau, Bauchi, Taraba, Kaduna, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Imo, Jigawa and Niger States.

Dr. O. Ochicha: Death of an Icon

It was on 06th of January 2018, an erudite giant in person of Dr. Ochica Ochicha from department of Histopathology at Bayero University kano-Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital has fallen. It’s indeed a great loss not only to the academics of BUK/AKTH but rather the community at large. He was best known by the students for his sunday lectures usually at Multipurpose Hall to 400lvl MBBS/BDS students. His lecture style, gestures and behavior often spell his uniqueness. Not only to his students, his colleagues often address him as “Walking Library”. Condolence message from Association of Resident Doctors reads like: “We regrettably express our condolences to the management of Bayero University /Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and family of Dr. Ochicha who recently passed away. He was our teacher and mentor. Unsupervised deliveries as major cause of maternal mortality

Dr Chris Agboghoroma, Chief Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, National Hospital, Abuja, has attributed maternal mortality rate in the country to dearth of human resources for healthcare and delivery at home. Agboghoroma told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja that no fewer than 60 per cent pregnant women give birth at home without the supervision of health personnel. The consultant was reacting to the ranking of Nigeria as 11th position in newborn deaths globally by the United Nations Children Fund. While flaying the ranking, the expert identified unsupervised delivery as a contributing factor to the high maternal mortality rate. According to him, a situation where many women in this country still give birth at home unsupervised is a licence to disaster.
