BAYERO UNIVERSITY KANO MEDICAL STUDENTS EMERGED THE ACADEMIC CHAMPIONS OF THE NATION

Bayero university medical students emerged victorious at the maiden edition of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) intermedical school quiz competition held during the Nigerian Medical Students’ Association (NiMSA) annual general assembly which took place in Gombe State University, Gombe state. BUK medical students qualified for the National phase of the competition having qualified in the zonal phase where they also emerged the first position with a gap of 20 marks ahead of other schools (UDUS, GSU, KASU, UNIMAID). BUK medical students during the national quiz were represented by Aminu Ado Wakili, Abdulazeez Garba Ahmad, Ahmad hassan Jibril, Shaheed,and Lawal, where they emerged the first position with 9 marks ahead of the runner up, other schools who participated include UNN, Uni Ilorin, Uni Abuja, Uni calabar, UDUS and BINGHAM. While presenting the trophy, the national president of the Nigeria Medical Association, Prof. Mike O. Ogirima heartily congratulated the champions and urged them to keep up the excellent work.
BUK medical students led by the Bayero University Medical Students’s Association (BUMSA) president, Abdullahi Lawal Kazaure, to the 41st NiMSA GA, participated actively during the GA in Gombe state. The activities in this year GA are Public lectures, launching of NiMSA magazine, NMA intrmedical school quiz competition. Adoption of NiMSA reviewed constitution, excursion, football match, health outreach and election, where Comrade Abubakar T. Shehu from BUK emerged as the vice president internal of NiMSA. Speaking by the president of BUMSA, this year GA is a huge success, he also expressed his profound gratitude to the faculty of clinical sciences, college of health sciences and BUK at large for their great support, and hopes to continue to make the university proud and be good ambassadors of BUK. Other BUMSites present during the GA includes the class representative of level 600B MBBS, the National president of Jigawa State medical students’ Association NAJIMS), the SUG president, Ameer of the Association of Muslim Health Students (AMHS) BUK, and other BUMSA excos. The team BUK returned to BUK on Sunday 12th November 2017, after the 5-day event in Gombe State to continue the pursuit of academic and moral excellence in the great university.

Dr. O. Ochicha: Death of an Icon

It was on 06th of January 2018, an erudite giant in person of Dr. Ochica Ochicha from department of Histopathology at Bayero University kano-Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital has fallen. It’s indeed a great loss not only to the academics of BUK/AKTH but rather the community at large. He was best known by the students for his sunday lectures usually at Multipurpose Hall to 400lvl MBBS/BDS students. His lecture style, gestures and behavior often spell his uniqueness. Not only to his students, his colleagues often address him as “Walking Library”. Condolence message from Association of Resident Doctors reads like: “We regrettably express our condolences to the management of Bayero University /Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and family of Dr. Ochicha who recently passed away. He was our teacher and mentor. Until his death, Dr Ochicha was an associate professor in the department of Histopathology Bayero University Kano / Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.  May his gentle soul rest in peace.” ...

Unsupervised deliveries as major cause of maternal mortality

Dr Chris Agboghoroma, Chief Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, National Hospital, Abuja, has attributed maternal mortality rate in the country to dearth of human resources for healthcare and delivery at home. Agboghoroma told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja that no fewer than 60 per cent pregnant women give birth at home without the supervision of health personnel. The consultant was reacting to the ranking of Nigeria as 11th position in newborn deaths globally by the United Nations Children Fund. While flaying the ranking, the expert identified unsupervised delivery as a contributing factor to the high maternal mortality rate. According to him, a situation where many women in this country still give birth at home unsupervised is a licence to disaster. He specifically noted that 60 per cent women in some states in the country deliver themselves at home, describing the situation as mostly responsible for the rate.
