BAYERO UNIVERSITY KANO MEDICAL STUDENTS EMERGED THE ACADEMIC CHAMPIONS OF THE NATION

Bayero university medical students emerged victorious at the maiden edition of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) intermedical school quiz competition held during the Nigerian Medical Students’ Association (NiMSA) annual general assembly which took place in Gombe State University, Gombe state. BUK medical students qualified for the National phase of the competition having qualified in the zonal phase where they also emerged the first position with a gap of 20 marks ahead of other schools (UDUS, GSU, KASU, UNIMAID). BUK medical students during the national quiz were represented by Aminu Ado Wakili, Abdulazeez Garba Ahmad, Ahmad hassan Jibril, Shaheed,and Lawal, where they emerged the first position with 9 marks ahead of the runner up, other schools who participated include UNN, Uni Ilorin, Uni Abuja, Uni calabar, UDUS and BINGHAM. Provost Cup Football Competition for students

Prof. Sani Alhassan, Provost College of Health Science (CHS) organize a maiden Provost Cup Football Competition in honour of his Office and the college at large to also gets the students participate actively in the “College of Health Science Foundation Day” celebrated every year ever since it was. The Participants includes all the faculties in the college each as a group. The five faculties include Clinical Science, Dentistry, Allied Health Science, Basic Medical Science and Pharmaceutical Science. For the smooth running of the competition, fixtures were agreed upon to be played during weekends(Sat. & Sun.) Unlike the popular knockout or group stage system, this time around its in a ‘League format’, thus the overall winner is He who gathers the highest points. Kick off is from 17th of February 2018 by 4pm. Each day, 2 games are to be played both at sport complex BUK oldsite(NUGA) i.e Fifa standard pitch and the other is the sandy pitch. FG to deworm pupils in 17 states

The Federal Ministry of Health will in December deliver an integrated deworming programme for pupils in public primary schools across 17 states currently under the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo's spokesman, Laolu Akande, listed the benefitting states as Abia, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Niger, Osun, Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Anambra, Benue, Imo, Kano, Kaduna, Ebonyi, Delta and Plateau, He said the programme would deliver three different drugs for the treatment of diseases endemic to specific states; particularly bilharzia; soil-transmitted worms and river blindness. Akande mentioned the drugs to be distributed as Albendazole, Ivermectin and Parazaquintel. He said over five million pupils in 28,249 schools were currently being fed in Anambra, Enugu, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ebonyi, Zamfara, Delta, Abia, Benue, Plateau, Bauchi, Taraba, Kaduna, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Imo, Jigawa and Niger States.

Unsupervised deliveries as major cause of maternal mortality

Dr Chris Agboghoroma, Chief Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, National Hospital, Abuja, has attributed maternal mortality rate in the country to dearth of human resources for healthcare and delivery at home. Agboghoroma told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja that no fewer than 60 per cent pregnant women give birth at home without the supervision of health personnel. The consultant was reacting to the ranking of Nigeria as 11th position in newborn deaths globally by the United Nations Children Fund. While flaying the ranking, the expert identified unsupervised delivery as a contributing factor to the high maternal mortality rate. According to him, a situation where many women in this country still give birth at home unsupervised is a licence to disaster. He specifically noted that 60 per cent women in some states in the country deliver themselves at home, describing the situation as mostly responsible for the rate. Tobacco, Alcohol and global mortality

Each year, seven in 10 deaths globally are from non-communicable diseases (NCDs), mostly from tobacco and alcohol use, unhealthy diets and physical inactivity, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said. WHO said while launching the Independent Global High-level Commission on NCDs that bold and innovative solutions were now on the table to accelerate the prevention and control of deadly NCDs. The UN health agency said such non-communicable were heart and lung disease, cancers and diabetes. Tabaré Vázquez, President of Uruguay and co-chair of new WHO high-profile panel said: “NCDs are the world’s leading avoidable killers. “But the world is not doing enough to prevent and control them. We have to ask ourselves if we want to condemn future generations to dying too young and living lives of ill health and lost opportunity. “The answer clearly is ‘no’.
