BUMSA inaugurates new EXCOS for the 2017/2018 administrastion

Bayero university medical students’ Association, popular known as BUMSA gets new excos for the 2017/2018 administration. The new excos were inaugurated by the BUMSA elcomm on the 28th of October 2017 in the faculty of clinical science theatre Kandahar AKTH. Speaking during the anuguration, the newly inaugurated president, Kazaure, seeks the cooperation of all BUMSites, and promised the be an easily accessible president who will welcome advice and suggestions from all, and promised to take BUMSA towards a greater height. He also promised to continue from where the past administration stopped, as leadership is a continuous process. Present during the event is the immediate past president, Adamu Bala Hussein, who urged all BUMSites to cooperate with the newly inaugurated excos, and promised to always be available whenever his assistance is needed. The SUG president, senator Kani was also present at the occasion, who promised to work in close proximity with BUMSA towards enhancing the welfarism of the medical students of BUK. Other people present at the occasion were the MBBS class representatives of level 600B, level 500 and level 400. And also present were medical students from all the classes viz: level 100 to level 600A, as well as other students from other faculties.

Dr. O. Ochicha: Death of an Icon

It was on 06th of January 2018, an erudite giant in person of Dr. Ochica Ochicha from department of Histopathology at Bayero University kano-Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital has fallen. It’s indeed a great loss not only to the academics of BUK/AKTH but rather the community at large. He was best known by the students for his sunday lectures usually at Multipurpose Hall to 400lvl MBBS/BDS students. His lecture style, gestures and behavior often spell his uniqueness. Not only to his students, his colleagues often address him as “Walking Library”. Condolence message from Association of Resident Doctors reads like: “We regrettably express our condolences to the management of Bayero University /Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and family of Dr. Ochicha who recently passed away. He was our teacher and mentor. Until his death, Dr Ochicha was an associate professor in the department of Histopathology Bayero University Kano / Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.  May his gentle soul rest in peace.” ...

Unsupervised deliveries as major cause of maternal mortality

Dr Chris Agboghoroma, Chief Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, National Hospital, Abuja, has attributed maternal mortality rate in the country to dearth of human resources for healthcare and delivery at home. Agboghoroma told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja that no fewer than 60 per cent pregnant women give birth at home without the supervision of health personnel. The consultant was reacting to the ranking of Nigeria as 11th position in newborn deaths globally by the United Nations Children Fund. While flaying the ranking, the expert identified unsupervised delivery as a contributing factor to the high maternal mortality rate. According to him, a situation where many women in this country still give birth at home unsupervised is a licence to disaster. He specifically noted that 60 per cent women in some states in the country deliver themselves at home, describing the situation as mostly responsible for the rate.
